1. Why did you write this book?
I was compelled after my dad broke his 63 year silence and began to tell us what
he did during the war. The stories were so amazing that I just had to share them
with others.
2. Why did your father change his mind and begin to tell you his story?
When his duffel bag was returned to him after being lost for 54 years was
the catalyst that made him ready to talk about his experiences. Before that he would
only tell us the funny stories that he was comfortable in telling.
3. What makes this WWII book different?
This is a true story that provides the reader a glimpse of pre-war hometown
USA compared to the death and devastation that was prevalent in Europe. It places
you there and gives you a sense of what they were feeling and what they left behind.
It tracks the exact movements of the medical clearing company as they followed the
major battles of the war such as D-Day, St. Lo, Market Garden, Battle of the Bulge,
and driving the Germans down the cologne plain to liberate the concentration camps
in Bavaria.
4. Who would enjoy reading this book?
The book has many facets that would appeal to a wide range of readers. It’s a war
story, a love story, a story that provides view of the war through the eyes of a
medical technician that provided comfort and treatment to those wounded. It chronicles
the war effort and the horrors of the concentration camps.
5. Is this another MASH story?
No, it’s a true story. However, that is an interesting question. It could easily
be construed the first hospitalonwheels@earthink.net story that was true. It has its lighter moments where
the medics get into and out of some very scary and humorous situations. They worked
hard and played hard. You will get a good laugh as the book describes some of their
lighter moments.
6. What helped you the most in writing this book?
I would have to begin with interviewing my father and the company journal
that identified the date, unit and location showing the movements of the 662 Medical
Clearing Company.
7. What is your background?
I have recently retired from a state agency where I
was employed as an information technology and project manager. I have written journal articles, technical documents and manuals for the
last twenty years.
